As the walls collapsed into the hungry current, Mira realized with cold certainty: this wasn’t just a disaster.mIt was the new normal. And the water was winning.
The rain hadn’t stopped in twelve days.
Mira stood on the rooftop of her family’s two-story home, clutching her little brother’s hand as the floodwaters churned below. The once-familiar streets of their riverside town were now a murky, rushing nightmare, swallowing cars, trees, and the neighbors who hadn’t evacuated in time.
“They said it was a hundred-year flood last time,” her father muttered, staring at the unrelenting storm. “Now it’s every other year.”
A distant roar echoed—another levee breaking. The water surged higher, lapping at the roof’s edge. Mira’s mother radioed for help again, but the emergency line was silent. Overloaded.
Then, the house shuddered. A crack splintered through the bricks below.
“It’s going down!” her brother screamed.
As the walls collapsed into the hungry current, Mira realized with cold certainty: this wasn’t just a disaster.
It was the new normal.
And the water was winning.
